These sculptures are what they are: wire, shadow, and paint. The
visual cues planted for deciphering them, however, have been carefully
positioned so that one’s perceptual conclusions become uncertain.
The viewer ponders a trail of sculptural suggestions. Because
of a resulting irresolution, one’s gaze often returns to
the beginning for another look. This recursive beholding (this
looking and re-looking) can be meditative, somewhat like gazing
at a sunset or staring into a fire.
By focusing
the object’s meaning on the very cues signifying its objecthood,
the work offers itself more precisely as an experience of objecthood.
